Francyna grew up in a small town in Holland, close to the Belgian border. Nursing was in her blood -- not surprising since she was the oldest of eleven children. After completing her R.N. studies she continued to stay close to home. Unable to neglect any one of her existing patients she turned down an offer to become a special operation room nurse, and instead maintained work at three local hospitals. And she was loved by all!
Next came her midwife years, taking care of young mothers with new born babies in the first hours of life. It was her most fulfilling work and Francyna was there for those young mothers and newborn babies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When a call came in, she would hop on her bike and pedal many kilometers, whether it was raining, shining or by the light of the moon. The doctor in town drove a surplus army jeep and when he was late, he would say "Don’t worry, Francyna takes care of everything.
Francyna and Herman got married in 1957. With two beautiful little girls, they moved to Canada. Three years, a set of twins, and one more boy later, the happy family moved to California. After being misdiagnosed and excused by doctors, Francyna passed away in 1969, leaving five children and her memory.
